Defensible Space Contractors & Clearing
Defensible space is the managed area around a structure where vegetation and other fuels are reduced, spaced and maintained. The goal is to slow fire spread toward the home and reduce the radiant heat and direct flame contact the structure has to withstand.
How the zones are usually described
Requirements vary by jurisdiction, parcel size and terrain. A local professional can explain what applies to a specific property.
- Zone 0 — the first five feet: the most critical area, kept free of combustible materials
- Zone 1 — roughly five to thirty feet: reduced, spaced and maintained vegetation
- Zone 2 — beyond thirty feet: thinned fuels, limbed trees and managed grass

- Brush and dead fuel removal
- Tree limbing and canopy separation
- Grass and weed abatement
- Removal of vegetation touching the structure
- Replacing combustible mulch near foundations
- Chipping and debris hauling
- Recurring seasonal maintenance
Defensible space is not the same as home hardening
Clearing vegetation reduces the intensity of fire reaching the home, but it does nothing about embers landing on the roof or entering a vent. The two work together — which is why most assessments cover both.
