Most homes lost in wildfires are not consumed by a passing wall of flame. They are ignited by embers that landed somewhere small.
Embers travel ahead of the fire
Under wind, burning material is lofted and carried well beyond the fire front. That means a home can be exposed to ignition sources long before — or entirely without — direct flame contact.
The common entry points
- Attic, gable and soffit vents with coarse or damaged screening
- Crawlspace and foundation vents near ground-level debris
- Gutters and roof valleys loaded with needles and leaves
- Gaps at tile ends, ridges, flashing and penetrations
- Decks: between boards, under the deck and in stored material
- Landscape beds and mulch against walls
- Wood fences and gates that run into the siding
- Broken or failed window glazing
Why small openings matter so much
An ember in an attic lands on wood framing, insulation and stored belongings, out of sight and out of reach. By the time it is visible from outside, the fire is established. That is why vent screening and debris removal repeatedly rank above cosmetic or large-scale work.
The practical response
Close the openings, remove the fuel that embers can land in, and break the continuous paths that lead from the yard to the wall. Those three ideas describe most of what a wildfire hardening project actually does.
